I think that the meaning of “vulnerability” is important to unpack. I make myself very vulnerable in some ways (I publish about my shortcomings as a pedagogue and such) but I would never put myself of my students at the real risk of physical harm if they blogged or tweeted about local politics, for example. It’s a completely different level of vulnerability, and we need to be clear what kind of vulnerability isself-reflective and helpful to learning and human relationships and what kinds pose risks we aren’t willing to take for whatever reason. Do we assign (allow?) our female students to write about topics that could draw trolls (or worse)…like rape(?) without doing some kind of risk aversion and open discussion of what might mean if they did so? and what is our role/responsibility when we encourage them to take risks if they face harm? I don’t know if I could leave them to learn by suffering on their own…
